Thumbs Up to What Really Matters...

What babies do is give one an immediate sense of what really matters. All the other mundane stuff falls right off the "plate of important things" that we seem to carry with us and keep piling ever higher. Perhaps we connect to their innocence and purity of being, some buried part of us that inherently recalls this state. It's nice to get there again. Babies do that for us.

On other topics, John was away last week in California and returned Thursday. Our friends Ian and Gill will arrive for a visit tomorrow and on Friday we will all go to Maui for a week's respite. There's something uniquely relaxing about Hawaii and having experienced it before, I anticipate having the experience again.

While I was in California on Grandmother duty, John reported that the bear returned. He was with a contractor at the house and right there, in the middle of the day, our wandering bruin appeared, casually checked out the birdseed (the feeders were empty) and left. Last Sunday, sitting at the table, I looked out to see a young coyote walk along the perimeter and then pop back into the woods. We continue to marvel at the effectiveness with which our hardheaded brown dog protected her territory. In the nearly 6 months since she passed away, the bear has visited at least three times that we know and deer and coyotes have appeared (thankfully not at the same time!). The rabbit(s) - we can't tell how many there might be as we only see them one at a time and they look the same- has made regular visits as well. No one has figured out yet that John keeps a garden of fresh green things on the other side of the lawn/meadow/jungle clearing.

Last night we tried out the local Community Theater in Bremerton to see The 39 Steps. What a fun experience. The play is nonstop with only 4 actors doing all the parts (and quite well). It's a little like The Goon Show for those who might know that group. Loads of costume and character changes that kept the audience laughing for most of the time. This morning we will have breakfast with friends at Port Gamble's General Store and enjoy the lovely day ahead. Weather has been and will continue to be dry and sunny with temperatures in the 70s. I've got the suitcases out and will begin packing them for the vacation ahead. And I will enjoy the "stuff that really matters", courtesy of my grandson. That's a big thumbs up....

With Love Grandson...

I have been in California for this past week to support the new parents and, of course, to spend time with the new grandbaby. He has settled in quite nicely, even letting mom and dad get a little sleep from time to time. I will return home tomorrow and feel assured that the new family will handle anything that comes. They are fortunate to be surrounded by friends, neighbors, and nearby family to help as needed. I will miss the little fellow something fierce, but hopefully, in this world of digital photography and Skype, we will not miss out on too much. It won't be the same as being there "in the flesh", but we'll work with what we can get. And with so many grandparents, they will be spread thin trying to give us all equal time. For now, it's been a treat and one I will put in my heart and cherish.
